Poster Series 7

Typographic Posters 2

This series of typographic posters were designed because I had some critique feedback suggesting that I experiment with the font of my typography as I stuck to Helvetica Neue, I personally have found a liking to this font... (could you not tell! 😂) but the thing I like about that font specifically its legible and easy to comprehend. but I am willing to experiment as I like to experiment I can't lie it is nice to explore what's out there more rather than sticking to the original.

With this series of posters, I created these inspired by a video on YouTube teaching me to create more exciting typography almost like a more graffiti street-art aesthetic after learning to do graffiti typography on 3D materials it was interesting to experiment further with a more diverse and digitalised aesthetic to my work, which I found this exciting and wanted this to show in my work. So I hope you enjoy what you're about to see. as this was me learning as a graphic designer and as a person on how to be more exciting and what I can do to make people say WOW! I have enjoyed creating this typography and have found this series of typographic experimentation exciting and glad I have learnt to pop my comfort bubble.

Here is the next series of posters:

Experimentation
This is the motherland for this series of posters- where my inspiration began, all I did was type some words up relating to COVID 19 almost like a typographic mood-board.

With this design was an experiment again with the typography design. but the idea of this concept was to write a letter or a message in different fonts, using the words of Boris Johnson's "Work from home, but go to work if you must." because this is honestly the most contradicted messages I have heard from a politician but I like this confusion and wanted to create something with this as this caused an uproar in 2020 due to the confusion across England which highly amused me.
I have seen this kind of design idea I come up with created before on tv programmes such as Spongebob for instance.

Call me a geek for referencing this but there was an episode where Sponge-bob gets quite a bossy and threatening letter from a family member... Blackjack as I had thought about that when I created the letter because its in a similar aesthetic where I have used different colours, designs and fonts for typography and you'll notice how bossy this text is. This is where my inspiration come from funny enough!

Here is more design experimentation based on this idea above, but this time I was looking at varied typefaces and fonts to create some excitement in these designs.

Lockdown Experimentations

With these experiments I wanted to continue with this aesthetic because I found this approach exciting and wanted to take this series further... here is what I came up with below.

This here is an example of how I came up with one of my experiments. I use a pattern filter for a background for the typography and I found with this to work with an illustrative background because it can make the type almost jump out at you making the text being the prime focus of these experiments.

The words of COVID 19!

This design concept has the same idea with the design idea, with experimenting with typography and fonts but this design concept is based upon COVID 19 when someone asks what lockdown is or what COVID 19 was like these words sums it up perfectly with a couple of perks being the Disney plus, Netflix and family time but the rest of what is described is the best way to describe 2020. what a way to start a new decade with a Bang!

Experimentations

With these experiments I decided as my typographic work looked quite graffiti like and has a very street art vibe  I wanted to try and bring that into my work as a background to see what it would look like as if the type was created like spray paint on a wall.  The inspiration for that again was the idea with exploring varied typefaces and fonts but what really grabbed my attention was the graffiti work people created in Lisbon, I went there before the pandemic happened with the UCA and I really liked the street art there and I like how their culture is so laid back about their street art.  In fact it makes me wish people accept street art more.  in varied places where it wouldn't be classed as an act of vandalism, which I also like these experiments because its almost like COVID 19 and the year 2020 is a vandalised year and I wanted to showcase this by creating a street art vibe with my design concept as in certain places graffiti and street art can be classed as vandalism.

Experiment with a black background

With these designs here I wanted to see what the type would look like with a blackened background which I think works well because it makes the type stand out more and the lettering looks quite bold whereas the design on the right-hand-side has a more grainy effect which I like more because it looks musky which I think is a way to describe 2020 and COVID 19 to be musky with the white dots within the background adding a texture into the backdrop- which for me I think is more exciting to look at as a design concept.

More experimentation

With these designs, I just added a graffiti like backdrop with a wall texture to add to the graffiti effect the concept works but It didn't come out as greatly as I hoped. More with the design on the left, I think it's bit too much going on and too much colour- for me there isn't any contrast and doesn't work as well as I hoped.  With the design on the right it works a little better because the backdrop is all greyscale which creates the better contrast with the colourful text in the foreground.

More experiments

These experiments I found to be more exciting, because I like the colour contrasts and it again brings out the text quite boldly the design out of these three I like the most Is the one in the middle because I like the darkened tones on the background where you can also see silhouette lettering where the wall pattern is in the background, for me this looks very modern-day and gives me the street art vibes.

Key Workers

Now I couldn't leave them out could I as they were the ones keeping the nation on their feet throughout lockdown I figured they deserved a graffiti wall of fame,  figured they should have a mood board too.  With these again I have experimented with varied fonts where I wanted to get each font different for each word but all I have changed in this section of posters is the colours of the background.

Experiments!

These designs have a simplistic aesthetic

These designs I like because they are generic and very basic. I quite like the simplicity of the design and the background, but I do think it looks quite bland and honestly a bit boring but I do like the simplicity. I think after creating experiments previously (on the images above these four designs. I think they look a bit dull, I don't find the detail eye captivating  in these designs.

These look a bit better, where I just experimented with a different pattern I had saved which I made a while ago- when I wanted to create a pangram, just for some free time I had. I liked the pattern and the colours I chose for them which is why the background looks more exciting- bit of course the only difference with these two designs is one background has a bit more of a neon light and the other one looks bit duller- where I have played and experimented with the different blend modes on Photoshop.

Here is some more exciting experimentation

Colourful splattered background

This effect works so well with this piece because of the text being greyscale and looks like its at a lower opacity the colours on the design brings out the type really well, the difference with these two images was flipping the background pattern in another direction and the use of different blend modes. I can't lie this is one of my favourite designs because its simple but also looks quite chaotic which can sum up the key workers day and I think the design concept works well.

Experimentation & ideas practice

These two designs above I really like as they give a really dark and hard hitting kind of aesthetic I really like the one on the right as the bolder yellow fives the design more power and lets the design stand out more- it works well because if you look closely, you can still see the bricks. this background gives the motion of power and lifesavers, it kind of gives me a firefighter's vive because of the yellow and orange look like a fiery look with a shadow, it works well with this kind of design- and it looks more exiting.

Skills practice

I really like these designs because the background is unique and for me these designs are more exciting and fun to look at! I like how the bold colours allow the type to stand out and pop out. It is effective yet I do wish I re-arranged the words a bit so they aren't in the same position for every single design, but then again I can learn that for future experiments.

Experimentations

These experiments here was me going a bit mad and getting really into the experimentation side of this series of posters- where in this case now I look back its like I didn't know when to stop because I got so hooked into experimenting with the background to see how exciting I can make my designs. the design on the left I really like the colours of the red, yellows and the green for the backdrop but I wished that the text was a but more legible as the background looks so exciting only a few of the words stand out policemen is harder to comprehend. the centralised design is like an explosion in a rainbow factory I like the pattern on the background but I think again it undermines the text a little bit. with this design on the right I like the fact it has minimal colours but the words like policemen, key workers & bin men etc isn't as legible.

These two designs above I went for a more rainbow aesthetic, I did this by selecting my background layer being the wall paper texture, then creating a separate layer for the colour being called the Gradient layer and then the text on another layer- which is how these designs came to life, the only difference is the blend mode on the layer for the brakes and the background.
