Artists and Graphic designers:- Alfred Leete & James Montgomery Flagg

Alfred Leete & James Montgomery Flagg

These are the artists who have created the "We need you" posters and the "Your country needs you"  I had this idea for a poster series after looking at these examples of poster designs has influenced and inspired me to create a mini series of posters, based on the frontline workers because of COVID 19.  These two artists and their poster work has a very similar message and aesthetic and both propaganda posters and trying to send a message across trying to persuade you to join the army and to help fight the war and save their countries.

Here are the posters that have influenced my imagery and research.

James Montgomery Flagg:- An American artist known for creating the I want you poster, for the American citizens going into war, back in September 1914.

Poster by James Montgomery

This piece is inspired by the idea of the words "I WANT YOU" which is a good imperative to get the motion of the poster. The imperative is the inspiration for this poster aesthetic as it is a way to attract your audience's attention in this case, it draws attention to the target audience is aimed towards American citizens seeing as James Montgomery Flagg is an American artist and designer, it makes sense for it to be aimed towards them, particularly because dog the words "U.S. ARMY" sums up the target audience.

This poster, has the same kind of aesthetic for the your country needs you poster design but instead for World war one this poster was designed for the US Army which as it states on the image above  that there was an adapted version of this poster for WW2 for the US Army. which was interesting to find out. This designers and artists lead me to insperation for other desigh ideas and concepts I can bring into poster designs, experiments and mockups too  but of bringing in the old fashioned and the contemporary aesthetic together.

Here more information I found on this link for this poster and about James Montgomery: https://amhistory.si.edu/militaryhistory/collection/object.asp?ID=548

Alfred Leete:-

Poster by Alfred Lette

This piece is designed by a British artist, this again is like the poster above, used to persuade squadrons to join the army doing National service and to help fight for the country- this piece the illustration of Lord Kitchener- who was a national hero- which would also help increase persuasion for its target audience, trying to conovice fellow citizens to fight for the country and be nation heroes like Lord Kitchener.

Here is another link to this poster design: -items/your-country-needs-you

On this link i found out this poster Alfred Leete’s used Lord Kitchener- who was a national hero before this poster was made which was designed using the concept of the Kitchener’s pointing finger and the words ‘Your Country Needs You’, which was famous... this poster wasn’t released till the year September 1914 after sign up to join the war peaked.

Out of the two posters I can't lie but to say I prefer the works of Alfred Lette, as his work is more simplistic and to the point "your country needs you" I like the illustrative approach and I particularly like how the word "you" is emphasised to grab the eye of the audiences this design is made for.  I preferred this design concept to the point of finding inspiration from this poster to create a design of my own- representing COVID 19 and the current affairs occurring.

#COVID 19 Poster 1

(A poster I designed based on the artist Alfred Leete)

As I said these two artists... (More the work of Alfred Leete)  has inspired me to create this kind of work for a serise of experiments... I wanted to have a bit of pastiche on the matters of politics as alot of the time I see it as one massive pisstake or simply a joke...I’m sure you do too. There are times where something Politicians  say just winds you up or some situations where

you’re supposed to take these people seriously but... half the time- you can’t... and sometimes you just want to experiment on that route... so I come up with the idea of creating a hybrid character of Boris Johnson and President Trump and have their quotes “Make America Great again” and “Stay home” “Stay safe” and “Save lives” as the captions of the posters as I figured it would make sense to reference something said by Trump and Boris Johnson if I intended on creating the hybrid of Boris Trump or Donald Johnson... or whatever works better... i’ll leave that to the readers to decide... I couldn’t resist- Trump and Boris look so alike they may as well be long distant relatives... they could of been in their past life, if you believe in that... but i had to create the hybrid... its the fact they look so alike and have the same career I thought this was the hybrid of the year.
