Graphic designer:- Shephard Fairey

Shephard Fairey

Shephard Fairey is an American street artist, Graphic designer and illustrator, he is best known for the piece: Hope- a poster made in 2008- when Barack Obama was running for presidency for the second time.

Hope: Shephard Fairey

This piece of Graphic Design is very political orientated and it has a strong ethic for propaganda and democracy and for persuasion and promotion, in a political way of marketing. Selling the iconic president to be. This poster represents the hope to pick the best man for president. This design was designed back in 2008, in which Fairey felt there was hope for Barack Obama to lead the country. The target audience is mostly aimed towards the American citizens because Obama is an American president and Fairey is trying to create a publication in a simplistic way of trying to persuade it’s audience to standby Obama.

The colour scheme for this poster is very strong, a strong element of red and blue which most would associate both colours together as. A bitter rivalry almost like a fight you would see in Boxing with the red corner” and the blue corner. These colours compliment each-other well as red can mean love, danger or power and blue can mean calm and collected and peaceful which you could say is the emotion Fairey wanted us to feel a certain air of power, love but also calm and peaceful, if you vote Obama in. I also notice the American flag is red, white and blue- which I therefore think this is another connection on the colour scheme.

The significance of the poster is the one worded text saying “HOPE” which means to have faith in someone and good can happen. This communicates that Fairey hopes Barack Obama becomes president and it can also suggest he sees hope in Barack Obama to make America great again.

The motive is to sell Obama. Making him stand out from the crowd over his competitors to gain the audience’s trust to vote him as president.

I found out this very artist has designed a poster for when lockdown commenced back in March/April time that this very Artist... Shephard Fairey designed this poster- I saw it on advertisements through adobe and seen this design on Facebook before. It is interesting to of found out who designed this poster because I did like that poster.

This is the poster I am referring to:

Poster made in 2020- based on COVID 19 and the key workers by Shephard Fairey.

This design is inspiring and I'd like to try experimenting in this kind of aesthetic. I the colour coordination for this poster works like a dream- I like the use of the tree typography as they do say the colour red represents Power, Love, Danger, Bravery. Red is an interesting colour for its representation as it can mean love but also danger- its quite a contradiction colour if you like... but it works with the Key-workers and the NHS because they're 2020's saviours and the red shows their dominance and their strength and unity to save lives.

The meaning for the colour red.

See, it just works to represent a nurse or a doctor working tirelessly in the NHS.

Red is the color of fire and blood, so it is associated with energy, war, danger, strength, power, determination as well as passion, desire, and love. Red is a very emotionally intense color. It enhances human metabolism, increases respiration rate, and raises blood pressure.  (That description for the colour red was found on google: "Color Meaning - Color Wheel Pro "   Therefore I think Shephard Fairey made a very good choice for the colour choice for the typography and the cross on the hat too. Showing the emergency services and the first aid symbol.
