Poster series 2

Poster designs Series 2

This second series of posters- is going to be based on Shephard fairly's Hope poster he made back in 2008. I found his imagery quite inspiring and wanted to include a segment or two of his aesthetic to my work, to enable me to create in another artist's aesthetic as opposed to my own.  I found his style very iconic and I have grown to like the street art he creates and wanted to try experimenting using his design techniques- ie: using the same colour scheme and the arrangement of the composition.

This piece is the motherland for this series of posters- I spent three days drawing this digital drawing- of myself- based on a recent photo I took of myself with "my new look" despite this originally, I did this piece for a bit of fun really, to capture the the new look and I couldn't help but find a love to this piece after hearing feedback from people about this image also- it made me want to come up with an excuse for this piece to intertwine with this year's summer project- originally I had it in my mind to label this piece as at skill development, exploration in techniques and processes and experimentation. Which I can do so but I wanted to use this design to almost experiment with recreating a design for a poster- very much inspired by Shephard Fairey.

Here is a couple people's comments on this piece: mind you they were very positive- I felt loved.

Feedback!

(I hope you don't mind me photographing this feedback: Call me lazy but it was easier to screenshot than to write the comments down)

HOME SAMPLES

These here are my experimental imagery that I created, in the aesthetic of Shepherd Fairey.  These pieces I made about the size of a CD cover or maybe a record cover sort of size, for the sakes of trial and error as I wasn't sure if this idea was going to work or not, which in this case- these experiments looked unique and of course I prefer my original drawing- but these didn't come out too badly, so I decided to develop this concept further just to see what one can create.

Here are my posters:
You will also see these posters in my sample book I have put together showing all my posters I have made for this project, if you take a look at it.

Poster 1

This then transformed from an experiment to a poster... I wanted an excuse to use this image- so I created a poster with this image. In order for me to put this poster together, I draw the illustration on illustrator and I then transferred that to photoshop file, I typed the type on illustrator because the type is sharper and has more sophisticated edging as apposed to photoshop where you have the annoyance of the text edging looking quite rigid and pixelated and then put a black background on the image as a separate layer.

Poster 2

This poster I tried to follow a similar aesthetic as Shepherd Fairey but experiment more with the gradients colours just to see what they look like. I think this method does work but- I feel the background is a bit on the overbearing side and doesn't allow the image to stand out, which if you ask me I think dismantles the purpose of a background to an image,

Poster 3

Here is another experiment again with various gradient tools  which I do think works better than poster 2 but, I do think you still lose the power of the image a bit I can't lie- I think the foreground image looks too faded. But despite that I do like the design because of the uniqueness about it and the way I have experimented with the gradient tool.

Then the poster developed to this... as I edit the original image via photoshop, exploring colour schemes and gradients and I discover that the colours red and black compliments each other very well after creating these posters along with other posters using the same colour scheme. the red uplifts the dark tones and the black brings out the radiance of the image.  I like the fact that the red us the background colour as it helps the image in the foreground stand out more.

Poster 5

This poster here, I have tried another experiment exploring various blend modes on photoshop, in this case these layers were separated the foreground, background and texts... and the foreground layer is the one I experimented with and chose the luminosity setting. which again for contrasting reasons this effect, does work quite well.

Poster 6

This next poster is just an experiment- again by changing the blend modes via Photoshop, I like this experiment as it shows more mystery and intriguing. As I managed to create a silhouette aesthetic poster which I think works really well with the two colours red and the black, it goes to show how two dynamic colours can work really well together especially when a design is kept simple!

Poster 7

This poster, again is another development made- experimenting with photoshop lenses, colour combinations etc. this design is very bold and works well.

Poster 8

This poster alongside poster 7, has a very similar aesthetic to the I love Simon, the book cover, dvd cover and movie poster, with the use of the red as the background bringing out the person. I have never seen this movie and haven't read the book but I have seen the cover for this movie and book which is why I knew about it and is why I had to reference it to show what I mean when I say the person who designed these images for Love Simon, followed a simular idea using text only either in black or in white with a red background allowing the character to stand out against the background.

You see what I mean now??

My favourite poster from this series has to be poster 1- lets face it you can't beat or knock the original- it's simplistic and stands out- the white text works well with the black background creating contrast- makes the poster not only legible but to stand out and it keeps the poster simple... as they say the simpler is better- but I do also like the posters with the red, black and white also again for the same reasons, but I am going to stay loyal to my original this time but I do like the majority of these posters for this series- I am happy with the progress I have made and seeing what i've learnt is being put to the test- I feel as I say the only let down with this series of poster is the background on posters 2 and 3 they're too dominant against the foreground character   in the picture and for me I don't think it works very well- but I am glad I made that experiment as you never know unless you play- trial and error is a fantastic wand for a wizard... as sometimes you make errors, but you learn from those errors to which you can make some successful work after the failure and midocure which I believe experimenting with the ones with the red, black and white colour scheme has done for me, as I wasn't 100% certain that was going to work out as I thought to begin with the black would be too dominant.
