Competition work

Art Moves 2020

Art that moves, is an annual competition to create Billboards based on current affairs Brexit wasn't it? no... not this time... but in this case is about COVID 19 and Corona Virus. This year I decided to take poart, which would make this be my first ever competition to ever be apart of as a Graphic Design student, which is quite Mind blowing especially for myself as a student as it is challenging me to express myself to others as I am very shy and I tend to stay inside the comfort blanket... but this is a big step for myself to create the controversial "Ah I love this piece" and the "Oh what a pile of sh*t"the way I see art is a controversial world as its all a matter of ones opinion of a piece of art- art is subjective! Which is good as I then learn the brutality of the real world.

Anyway enough of me blowing my own trumpet, here are the pieces I submitted for Art that Moves:

Entry 1: COVID 19 (SPLAT!)

With this piece the design concept came from the word COVID 19 just as a typographic entry. Where I have chosen Helvetica Neue for the font because it is a simplistic font and it is legible. The idea of this design came from discovery as I was learning some of the Programmes on Adobe suite, in this case I was using Adobe Dimension. Where I was able to have the 3D typography like a billboard sign. I also added some splat effects from Adobe Dimensions and drew out the splat germs on the background spreading the germ, spreading the love kind of thing and I then took all this to photoshop, where I was able to get the Rainbow colouring for there type and the splats with a blackened background which I think works amazingly with the bold colourful text. I also like the idea of the text being in rainbow colours because when we were in lockdown there was lots of Rainbows up people's windows supporting the NHS and all the frontline heroes. for me, this is one of my favourite pieces I have created for this summer project. the reasons being my exploration with colour theory and the theme of colour in this piece are captured very well and the simplicity of this piece is really good as even though this piece is simplistic it is very dynamic and its one of those pieces that you're going to pay attention to.

Feedback: 'I like the splat effect on the 19 and on the background, it looks quite nice" ~ Johnny (Friend outside UCA)

Entry 2: SMILE!

This piece has mixed views on the subject matter some thinks this piece is brilliant whereas some think its crossing the borderline a little bit here, which both sides of the story are valid as I can see where people are coming from when they see this piece. I like the idea of my piece being controversial because it means people are talking about it and if they're talking about my work weather its in a good way or a bad way it's made a reaction every piece of work that has a reaction it means its done the job because its making people think about the message of the art and it means it's going to be remembered.

This piece is actually based on a spinoff image. because I came up with the idea of this concept to be a small series of posters (partly to show witty dark humour but at the same time show how dangerous COVID 19 well and truly is) This piece is also based on the smile posters you get at the dentist saying "Smile you forgot to floss!" and the whole "smile you're on CCTV" in taxis sometimes they have CCTV running. But this is more inspired by the dental aesthetic.

Here is the original designs:

Smile!
The Original piece!

This design concept I felt was quite a clever one because COVID 19 can be captured by touch and saliva and you get that in your mouth so I wanted to create a dental aesthetic because they're also frontline workers. I liked the snappy slogan to keep this poster simple and I liked the idea of the braces saying COVID 19 as the colourful brackets of the braces. I thought that was a really clever idea I had. I liked the catchy slogans.
Despite it being quite a clever idea. this can be an idea that can be pushed to the edge a little bit because COVID 19 isn't a laughing matter- people can presume this is dark humour and could find it quite offensive but despite the odds I enjoyed creating this piece and I learnt quite a lot whilst creating this piece, I leant more about poster alignments in this design- it was one of the first designs I did for this project and I began to learn that sometimes power of an image can show more than words as can words show more dominance than an illustration, I also learnt about the alignment of text, based on where it would be appropriate to place it in varied areas in this case I went for the safety net and kept it simple I used the ruler on illustrator where I was able to line up the Y on the "You've" and the S on the "Smile' I really liked the red and blue brush strokes because it looked like aqua fresh toothpaste which I thought was quite clever considering the aesthetic of this poster being based on Dentistry.

Entry 3

With this piece, I found inspiration to come up with the idea of creating designs in different languages saying stay home, stay safe and I think it was save lives (Boris's motto in different languages) and this competition being polish I wanted to do a design in polish saying those words but with some English text, which I can't lie I wish I put those words stay home, stay safe and save lives but sadly it didn't occur to me to do so!) if I were to do this design again I would if Done that. but I like the idea of including other countries ties because it was counties across the world effected by this pandemic not just UK! I also like the fact the background is the Polish flag! which is again a very clever concept.  The reason I did polish for this competition is because the competition is Polish and wanted to try and include that with this entry.
